Summary

First World War memorial, 1919.

Reasons for Designation

Great Hatfield War Memorial, situated on Main Street, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reason:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the First World War.

History

Great Hatfield War Memorial was unveiled in 1919. It stood originally at the junction of North Road and Main Street. Conservation and repair work was carried out in 2002, funded by War Memorials Trust, including the relocation of the memorial to its current position having been knocked over twice by vehicles.

Details

The memorial stands in a grassed area on the north side of Main Street, some 150m to the east of its original position. Built of Portland stone and c2.4m tall, it comprises an obelisk that rises from a tall, square plinth with a moulded capital. The plinth is decorated with carved rope-twist borders and segments with floral motifs. The plinth stands on a two-stepped, square, base.

The front face of the plinth bears an inscription that reads HATFIELD/ 1914 – 1919/ WAR MEMORIAL/ FALLEN/ (1 NAME)/ SERVED (13 NAMES). An inscription on the front face of the top step of the base reads WHAT MEAN YE BY THESE STONES?/ THESE SHALL BE FOR A MEMORIAL FOREVER/ JOSHUA IV 6.
