Reasons for Designation
Thriplow War Memorial, situated opposite The Green in the village of Thriplow, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic Interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Group Value: with The Smithy (Grade II-listed).
History
Thriplow War Memorial was unveiled on 12 November 1922 by Captain R Croft Montague, who had conducted a recruitment drive in the village in 1914, and dedicated by Reverend A Robbs and the Congregational minister Reverend F Hutt. Raised by public subscription, it commemorates the 13 local servicemen who died during the First World War. The memorial was produced by Messrs Whitehead and Sons. An inscription in honour of those who died in the Second World War was added after the end of that conflict. Conservation and repair work was carried out in 2014, funded by War Memorials Trust.
Messrs Whitehead and Sons was a firm of masons in Royston, Hertfordshire. The company also carried out the stonework for the Grade II-listed war memorial at Royston, designed by P Morley Horder.
Details
The memorial stands on the south side of the road, opposite The Green in Thriplow. Built of Portland stone, it comprises a narrow stone of remembrance c1.85m tall, rectangular in plan and surmounted by a low block of stone on which is carved THRIPLOW. The stone is flanked by narrow, tapered, pilasters. A stone laurel wreath carved in relief decorates the upper face of the stone.
The principal dedicatory inscription on the front face of the memorial, carved either side of the laurel wreath, reads IN HONOUR OF THOSE/ WHO FOUGHT AND IN MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914-1919/ (13 NAMES).
In addition, another inscription below reads AND THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945/ (3 NAMES). All inscriptions are incised.
The memorial is enclosed to the rear by a yew hedge, with a metal railing to the sides and front. Access to the memorial is through an opening in the front rail. The memorial stands on a paved surface of York stone and is approached from the pavement by a narrow path.
