Summary

First World War memorial. Erected c1920.

Reasons for Designation

The First World War Memorial at St Mark’s Church, St John’s Wood, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as a First World War memorial that has strong cultural and historic significance within both a local and national context;
* Commemorative: it forms a poignant reminder of the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made during the First World War;
* Group value: with the Grade II* listed St Mark’s Church and adjacent Grade II listed house on Hamilton Terrace.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw a huge wave of public commemoration with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country. One such memorial was erected in c.1920 to commemorate residents of St John’s Wood who died during the conflict.

DESCRIPTION: the war memorial stands in the churchyard of St Mark’s Church. It is immediately south-west of the church tower. The column rests upon a square plinth 0.7m high and two-tiered square base 1m high. Encircling the plinth is the following inscription, anti-clockwise from SW: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND/ THE MEMORY OF THE MEN/ FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. Beneath it are inscribed 118 names of those that lost their lives. On the top tier of the base is the inscription: THE LORD SHALL GIVE HIS PEOPLE/ THE BLESSING OF PEACE.
