Summary
War memorial, erected in c1919.
Reasons for Designation
Ditcheat War Memorial, which is situated within the churchyard, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: a well-executed memorial in the form of a wheel-head cross.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was erected in the churchyard in Ditcheat to commemorate the Fallen from the parish who lost their lives during the First World War. A newspaper article from November 1918 refers to the establishment of a committee of parishioners to consider commemoration proposals. A marble war memorial plaque was also erected in the church which names the sixteen men who died during the First World War and the four from the Second World War.
