Reasons for Designation
The war memorial at the former Church of St John the Evangelist, Godolphin and Latymer School, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the First World War;
* Group value: with the Church of St John the Evangelist (Grade II*), Godolphin and Latymer School (Grade II) and Vicarage to Church of St John the Evangelist, including Garden Wall (Grade II).
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at the Church of St John the Evangelist (Grade II*-listed) at the junction of Iffley Road and Glenthorne Road, Hammersmith, as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the parish who lost their lives in the First World War.
The church became redundant in 2005. The building is on a long lease to Godolphin and Latymer School. The school makes use of the memorial for acts of remembrance.
Details
The war memorial comprises a stone cross, c 3m tall, standing to the west of the tower of the former Church of St John the Evangelist (The Bishop Centre, Godolphin and Latymer School). The cross head is a type of cross pattee, the centre of which is ornamented with blind Gothic tracery. The cross head has a moulded foot, rising from a square-sectioned shaft with chamfered edges. The shaft stands on a small, square, pedestal. The whole is set on a low, square, stone slab.
The front face of the pedestal is incised with the dedicatory inscription, TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR HONOUR/ AND FREEDOM/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918.
