Summary

First World War memorial, with later additions for the Second World War.

Reasons for Designation

Tittensor War Memorial, situated at the junction of Winghouse Lane and Stone Road in the village of Tittensor, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic Interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a simple yet dignified obelisk.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at Tittensor as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by members of the local community during the conflict. The names of those who died in the Second World War were added to the south face of the memorial at a later date. Conservation work funded by War Memorials Trust took place in 2003 in order to repair the surrounding paved area.

Details

The memorial, set on a York stone paved area, comprises a c2m tall, tapering, stone pylon, rectangular on plan, standing on a two-stepped base. The pylon is surmounted by a low pyramidal cap. The east face of the pylon is ornamented by a wreath carved in relief. Below that the incised inscription reads TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE/ BRAVE MEN FROM THIS/ CHURCH & PARISH WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR (9 NAMES). The names of the men include rank. At the foot of the pylon, on the east side, is carved 1914 – 1918.

The south face of the pylon bears an incised inscription that reads IN GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF/ THOSE FROM THE/ PARISH OF TITTENSOR/ WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN THE SECOND/ WORLD WAR (4 NAMES). This list of names does not include rank. Below that, at the foot of the pylon, is inscribed 1939 – 1945.
