Reasons for Designation
The war memorial at Barton St David, Somerset is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a well-crafted obelisk in dressed stone;
* Intactness: the structure is unaltered.
History
The war memorial to members of Barton St David Parish who served in the First World War was erected in the 1920s. It is shown on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1930. The memorial was later updated with a tribute to those who served in the Second World War.
Details
First World War memorial obelisk of 1920s date, with later additions for the Second World War, set within a garden of remembrance.
MATERIALS: constructed of stone.
DESCRIPTION: the memorial is an obelisk, square on plan, with a tapering shaft mounted on a tall tapering plinth with moulded panels and a shallow base. The top of the front face of the shaft has a wreath emblem and LEST WE/ FORGET in relief. The plinth front face is inscribed: IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918/ (Names)/ 1939 (Name) 1945. The left and right faces are inscribed: ROLL OF HONOUR/ (Names). It stands within a paved garden of remembrance with a rubble stone front wall with iron gate, and an iron railed fence to the rear.
