Reasons for Designation

The war memorial at Wedmore, Somerset is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a well-crafted cross design in dressed stone;
* Intactness: the structure is unaltered;
* Group value: it forms an important group with the Grade I-listed Church of St Mary and a variety of Grade II-listed churchyard structures.

History

The war memorial to members of Wedmore Parish who served in the First World War was erected by 1923. The memorial was later updated with a tribute to those who served in the Second World War.
