Summary
A First World War memorial, dating from 1921; Second World War inscription added.
Reasons for Designation
Sampford Arundel War Memorial, which is situated within the churchyard, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Architectural interest: as a simple and well-proportioned memorial in the form of a Latin cross;
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Group value: with the Grade II listed Church of the Holy Cross and churchyard gate piers and gates.
History
As part of the great wave of commemoration of the sacrifice made by the Fallen from communities across the country, the war memorial at Sampford Arundel was erected in 1921. It is prominently situated at the entrance to the churchyard and commemorates the local men who served during the First World War, six of whom lost their lives. A further inscription was added after the Second World War to commemorate a serviceman who died during this conflict.
