Reasons for Designation
Chute and Chute Forest War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: an elegant Celtic-style wheel-head cross with carved decorative details;
* Group value: with listed buildings around the green including Hatchetts (Grade II), Lower Farmhouse (Grade II) and The Elms (Grade II).
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England, both as a result of the huge impact the loss of three quarters of a million British lives had on communities and the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss. One such memorial was raised at Chute in 1920 as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.
Following the Second World War, a dedication was added to commemorate the fallen of that conflict. In 2013 a project was undertaken to improve the inscriptions with the help of grant aid from War Memorials Trust.
Details
MATERIALS: Portland stone.
DESCRIPTION: Chute and Chute Forest War Memorial consists of a Celtic-style wheel-head cross decorated with carved interlacing knot work in relief. It is set on a tapered shaft on a single-step base.
On the west face of the plinth is a dedicatory inscription in painted Gothic script which reads: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF CHUTE AND CHUTE FOREST/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918.
On the east face is a later dedication to the fallen of the Second World War which reads: KILLED IN ACTION IN THE/ WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
The memorial sits on a raised base enclosed by a stone post and chain link fence.
