Summary

First World War memorial, 1919, with later additions for the Second World War.

Reasons for Designation

King’s Sutton War Memorial, which stands on The Square, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this local community, and the sacrifice it has made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a simple Classical obelisk;
* Group value: with the Church of St Peter and St Paul (Grade I), The Courthouse (Grade II*), and a number of Grade II-listed buildings around The Square.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was raised at King’s Sutton as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community, who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

The memorial commemorates 22 local servicemen who died during the First World War.  Following the Second World War, a dedication was added to commemorate the ten who died in that conflict.  The memorial was dedicated in 1919 with a re-dedication taking place in 2009 when the memorial was moved from the cemetery outside the village to the green, in front of the parish church. In 2014 the memorial was cleaned with the help of grant aid from War Memorials Trust.

Details

MATERIALS: granite obelisk.
