Reasons for Designation
This 1879 Decorated Gothic style lychgate and attached churchyard wall by E P Loftus Brock is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons::
* Design interest: an inventive design in good quality well-crafted materials by a notable architect;
* Degree of survival: the structures are unaltered;
* Group value: adjoins the Church of St Stephen (Grade II*) and is of the same date, style and designed by the same architect.

Details
Lychgate with an attached churchyard wall. Dated 1879, by the architect E P Loftus Brock in the same Decorated Gothic style as the Church of St Stephen's Church (Grade II*), for Oswald Augustus Smith of Hammerwood Park (Grade I).
MATERIALS: lychgate of rock faced sandstone, timber-framing and tiled roof and wooden gates with iron hinges. Churchyard walls of rock-faced sandstone.
PLAN: the lychgate is square on plan and attached to a curved section of the churchyard wall on the north side which has three other straight sides.
DESCRIPTION: the lychgate has a rock-faced stone base with diagonal plain stone coping and is approached on the north side by two stone steps. Above the plinth is a timber-framed structure with open sides and a gabled tiled roof. On the north and south sides are curved braces supporting a slightly curved tie beam dated 1879 and three posts with arched decoration above. Stone piers also have curved braces attached to the corner posts. The gables have plain barge-boards with carved pendants. Attached to the base on the north side are wooden gates with carved quadrant patterns and ornamental hinges. The lychgate is attached to the low churchyard wall, of rock-faced stone with smooth stone diagonal coping, which has a curved section facing the road on the north side, straightening out towards the corners and the three other sides of the rectangle are straight.
