Late C19 cast iron mile post, one of a series marking the Malton to York road.
Reasons for Designation
The Milepost on the A64 marking 14 miles to York is listed for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as a good example of Victorian street furniture;
* Group value: with at least six other mileposts along the route which are also listed.
History
One of at least seven mile posts marking the 18 mile route between York and Malton now identified as the A64, all having been relocated by varying distances. Cast by Mattisons of Bedale, probably in the late C19, it is marked on the 1893 Ordnance Survey map approximately 500m closer to Malton than its current location.

Milepost, cast by Mattisons of Bedale, late C19.
Description: cast iron of triangular cross section with an open rear and a blank, sloping upper face. The left face is embossed with a pointing hand above the text MALTON 4 MILES. The right face is similar but with text YORK 14 MILES. Mattisons of Bedale marked on the rear.
