Summary

First World War memorial with later additions for the Second World War.

Reasons for Designation

Cholderton War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a simple yet elegant Latin cross;
* Group value: with nearby barns (Grade II).

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England, both as a result of the huge impact the loss of three quarters of a million British lives had on communities and the official policy of not repatriating the dead, which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.

One such memorial was raised at Cholderton as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. It carried no names, which were listed in the church.

The memorial was relocated from its position at the junction of Grateley Road in 1983 further N to its present position and, in 1995, it was additionally inscribed with a Second World War dedication.

Details

The memorial is located outside Manor Farm House and it comprises a Latin cross surmounting a rectangular tapered shaft with a carved boss at the centre of the cross arms. It is set on a circular base of rough-hewn stone.

The inscription on the shaft in black letters reads 1914/ REMEMBRANCE/ 1918/ 1939 – 1945.
