Reasons for Designation
The War Memorial at St John the Evangelist Church, Upper Norwood is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifices they made in the First World War;
* Architectural Interest: as a dignified war memorial in the form of a gabled Calvary cross;
* Group value: with the grade II* listed St John the Evangelist Church.
History
The aftermath of the World Wars saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country. One such memorial was raised in Upper Norwood outside St John the Evangelist Church as a permanent testament to the sacrifices made by the members of the local community. It was unveiled in a ceremony on 2nd November 1919.
Details
War memorial unveiled 2nd November 1919. A wooden cross with gable, with a statue of a crucified Christ. This rests on a concrete block base bearing a brass plaque; the top of the plaque bears a crucifix, below which is the inscription: 'S. JOHN THE EVANGELIST. / ROLL OF HONOUR / 1914 - 1918'. Below this, in the two columns, are the names of the fallen. At the bottom of the plaque it reads: 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. S JOHN X V. VERSE XIII'. The memorial stands in a small circular rockery.
