Summary
War memorial in the form of a stone Celtic cross.
Reasons for Designation
Selhurst War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifices they made in the First World War;
* Design: as a well executed stone Celtic cross war memorial.
History
The aftermath of the World Wars saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country. One such memorial was raised in Selhurst outside Holy Trinity Church as a permanent testament to the sacrifices made by members of the local community. It was designed by Arthur Hook and unveiled on 25th November 1922 in a ceremony attended by Lt Col F S Montague Bates, CB CMG DSO and the Reverend F J Groves. Holy Trinity Church was demolished in the early 1980s and replaced with the present Trinity Court housing development.
Details
Tall Celtic cross made of granite, the front bearing a carving of a sword, resting on a rounded stone plinth. The front of this bears the inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND / IN MEMORY / OF ALL WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1918 / ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF SELHURST. This plinth rests on a granite block standing on a two-stepped base.
