Summary
A Portland stone pillar war memorial, located in the grounds of Whitehorse Manor School.
Reasons for Designation
Whitehorse Manor School War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on Whitehorse Manor School, and the sacrifices they made in the First World War;
* Design: as a simple yet dignified Portland stone pillar war memorial.
History
The aftermath of the World Wars saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country. One such memorial was raised at Whitehorse Manor School (then known as Whitehorse Road School) as a permanent testament to the sacrifices made by the Old Scholars of the school. It was unveiled on 22nd June 1920 in a ceremony attended by the Mayor of Croydon Charles Heath Clark and various local clergy and dignitaries. The memorial was refurbished circa 1992 and re-dedicated on Armistice Day 1995. It continues to be the focus of the School's annual Remembrance Day commemorations.
Details
Portland stone plinth, resting on a square base. On this in turn rests a smaller square plinth topping out to a pyramid shape. The front of the upper section bears a carving of a standing white horse. The front on the main plinth bears the following inscription in black lettering: THIS MEMORIAL / IS DEDICATED TO / THE GLORIOUS MEMORY / OF THE OLD SCHOLARS OF / THE WHITEHORSE ROAD / COUNCIL SCHOOL / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR / THEIR KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1919. Below this in lower case is the quote "Immortal, though no more; though fallen, great" from Lord Byron's poem 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage'.
