Reasons for Designation
Woodcote War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifices they made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design: as a simple yet dignified stone pillar war memorial.
History
The aftermath of the World Wars saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across the country. One such memorial was raised in Woodcote as a permanent testament to the sacrifices made by the members of the local community. The land and half the cost of the memorial was donated by William Webb, who developed the Woodcote estate.
Details
Two granite blocks, the upper one slightly trapezoidal, resting on a granite base. The north face features a recess formerly containing a drinking fountain (now removed). The south face features in black lettering the inscription: THIS / VILLAGE GREEN / IS DEDICATED TO THE USE / OF THE PUBLIC / IN MEMORY OF THE MEN / AND WOMEN OF THE / URBAN DISTRICT OF / COULSDON & PURLEY, / WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES / IN DEFENCE / OF THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE / WORLD WARS / 1914 - 1918 / 1939 - 1945. Below this, and also on the east and west sides, are the names of the Fallen.
