Summary
A First World War memorial, erected in 1926.
Reasons for Designation
The First World War memorial at Woolverton is listed at Grade II, for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Design interest: a well-executed stone memorial, with good inscriptions.
History
The memorial was erected after the First World War, as part of the great wave of commemoration of the sacrifice made by the Fallen from communities across the country. It was set up in a prominent position on the main road through the village, on land given by Mr RHP Batten-Pooll of Rode Manor. The memorial was unveiled on 4 October 1926 by Capt Arthur Batten-Pooll VC, MC, and dedicated by the Bishop of Bath and Wells. The memorial commemorates the 21 men of the village who fought in the First World War, including Walter Haine, who died in France in 1916.
