Reasons for Designation
West Moors War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Historic interest:
* as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact on the local community of the events of the First World War.
Architectural interest:
* a dignified yet sombre stone cross, neatly made and well-proportioned.
History
West Moors War Memorial was unveiled on the 26 September 1920 and was built by masons Messrs Alsford. It originally stood and the junction of Station Road and Pinehurst Road and commemorated 11 local servicemen who died during the First World War.
The memorial was moved in June 1971 to place it in a more prominent position at the centre of the village. At this time it was restored and the names of the 20 fallen of the Second World War were added.

MATERIALS: Portland stone.
DESCRIPTION: the memorial stands on the village green at the centre of West Moors.
It consists of a plain wheel-headed cross which rises from a tapering square plinth on a two-stepped base.
The inscription on the front face reads WEST MOORS/ UNVEILED SEPTEMBER 26 1920/ REMOVED TO THIS SITE JUNE 1971. The side of the plinth reads THESE/ GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR HUMANITY IN THE/ GREAT WARS/ 1914 - 1918/ 1939 - 1945/ THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE. The other two faces list the names of the fallen. The first is preceded by IN HONOURED MEMORY, and the second by 1939 - 1945.
