Summary
First World War memorial.
Reasons for Designation
Coney Weston War Memorial, which is situated outside the village hall, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Historic interest:
* as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the First World War.
Architectural interest:
* a well-executed wheel-head cross memorial.
Group value:
* with the Grade II-listed Coney Weston House.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead which meant that the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss.
One such memorial was raised at Coney Weston as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the seven members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. It was probably erected not long after the end of the conflict. The memorial was built by Mr R H Hall, who also erected the war memorial in neighbouring Market Weston.

DESCRIPTION: Coney Weston War Memorial is located at the roadside in front of Coney Weston village hall. To the north-east of the memorial is the Grade II-listed Coney Weston House.
The memorial is of polished, grey granite and takes the form of a plain wheel-head cross with a tapering, four-sided shaft and moulded foot. This rises from a tapering, four-sided plinth which surmounts a single-step chamfered base. The whole stands on a two-stepped concrete foundation. All lettering is incised, painted gold.
The inscription and names are recorded on the north face of the plinth, which reads IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914–1918/ (7 NAMES).
The memorial is enclosed by eight wooden posts* joined by chains*.
* Pursuant to s1 (5A) of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 (‘the Act’) it is declared that these aforementioned features are not of special architectural or historic interest.
