Reasons for Designation
Howgill War Memorial, built 1920, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Historic interest:
* as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this very small rural community, and the sacrifices it made during the First World War.
Architectural interest:
* it is a dignified monument executed in good quality materials, which provides an elegant and fitting tribute to the Fallen of the district.
Group value:
* the memorial benefits from a spatial and historic group value with the listed Grade II Church of the Holy Trinity, and a spatial group value with the nearby listed Grade II K6 telephone kiosk.
History
Howgill War Memorial is prominently situated in a central position in the western end of the churchyard of the listed Grade II Church of the Holy Trinity and is over-looked by a listed Grade II K6 telephone kiosk. The memorial was unveiled in October 1920 to commemorate seven local servicemen who fell in the First World War. It was not altered to commemorate the Second World War.

MATERIALS: marble
DESCRIPTION: the memorial faces north-east towards the west door of the church and comprises a stone wheel head cross raised on a square plinth with a shallow raised upper surface, and a single-stepped square base. The ends of the cross are indented, the wheel head takes the form of a carved laurel wreath and the intersection of the cross has an intaglio carved circular boss. The north-east face of the shaft bears an inscription in incised lettering and reads: THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ IN MEMORY/ OF THE/ HOWGILL/ LADS/ WHO DIED/ THAT WE/ MIGHT LIVE. The names of the Fallen are inscribed on the plinth, followed by: ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION.
