War Memorial in the Churchyard of St Michael and St Magdalene Church

II

War Memorial, dedicated in 1920, designed by Temple Moore, constructed in stone.
EXTERIOR: Gothic Revival Cross. Tall tapering octagonal shaft with moulded cap surmounted by beveled cross. The shaft rests on a stepped base. The inscription in Gothic lettering around the steps of the base dedicates the cross to the memory of the men of the parish who died in the First World War and bears sixty-three names.
HISTORY: The war memorial was commissioned by the parish of Easthampstead in June 1919 and dedicated in February 1920, and is inscribed with sixty-three names. Unusually, this memorial is not inscribed with additional names of those fallen in the Second World War, who are commemorated on a plaque in the church.
SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: War memorials have very strong historic and cultural significance, on both a local and national scale. This simple and elegant cross has further interest as a design of Temple Moore, an eminent architect of the late Gothic revival.

Legal

This building is listed under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 as amended for its special architectural or historic interest.
