The Home Front (1914-1918) and its Legacies: a pilot study for a national public archaeology recording project of First World War legacies in Britain: 2014-2018
Author(s): Nicholas Saunders, John Schofield, Emily Glass
This report covers the results of a pilot project into the methodology of recording the legacies of first World War sites by researchers, especially volunteers, using the Lea Valley, (in Essex and Greater London) and Staffordshire as trial areas. The pilot was commissioned by English Heritage from Bristol and York Universities as part of the National Heritage Protection Plan's work on 20th century military heritage and to support commemoration of the centenary of the First World War. The project covered desk based assessment of the pilot areas, recruitment and training of the volunteers, field work and completion of a database and further dissemination methodology. The lessons of the pilot helped inform a wider national recording project steered by the Council for British Archaeology (CBA).
