The Former White Lion Public House, Holker Road, Buxton, Derbyshire: Tree-ring Analysis and Radiocarbon Wiggle-matching of Oak Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cathy Tyers, Bisserka Gaydarska, Michael Dee

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on 10 of the 11 samples (one sample having too few rings for reliable analysis) obtained from different timbers throughout the body of this building. This analysis produced a single site chronology comprising six cross-matching samples, this site chronology being 65 rings long. A number of matches were found for the series composed of six timbers with a tentative end date of AD 1780 but these were not very strong, and were matched only with local chronologies, so were not accepted as an independent secure dendrochronological date. Radiocarbon dating was undertaken on four single-ring samples from one of the timbers represented in the tentatively dated site master chronology. Wiggle-matching of these results suggests that the final ring of this sequence formed in cal AD 1750–1789 (69% probability) or cal AD 1928–1983 (26% probability), or in cal AD 1770–1787 (59% probability) or 1956–1968 (9% probability). The tentative matching identified for the site master chronology by ring-width dendrochronology is thus supported independently by the radiocarbon wiggle-matching, giving a felling date of AD 1780DR.
