Church Tower, 100m North of the Church of St John, Shenstone, Lichfield, Staffordshire: Tree-ring Dating of Oak Timbers

Author(s): Alison Arnold, Robert Howard, Cathy Tyers

Dendrochronological analysis was undertaken on samples taken during renovations resulting in the dating of 21 timbers. Two main floor beams/tiebeams are dated as felled in the range of AD 1707–32, with three joists having terminus post quem dates for felling of AD 1467, AD 1490, and AD 1535. A timber identified as a possible joist was retrieved from a skip and has a terminus post quem date for felling of AD 1471. Three ex situ timbers accompanying the bellframe were felled in the winter of AD 1625/6, and three bellframe braces, as well as a number of other associated timbers were also likely to have been felled at the same time. Four of the bellframe posts and a cill are slightly later, dating to the AD 1630s.
