This building was originally the Towcester Union Workhouse. It was built in 1836 to the designs of G. Gilbert Scott. He also designed workhouses at Kettering, Northampton, Brackley and Oundle. The Poor Law Commissioners authorised an expenditure of £4,000. It was meant to house up to 208 inmates.
