A young child's room in the isolation block, Lodge Moor Hospital, Sheffield

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Lodge Moor Hospital Sheffield. Picture shows a cubicle in the isolation block, with a four-year old patient recovering from pneumonia and diphtheria.” Lodge Moor Hospital was founded in 1888, partly as a response to an epidemic of smallpox in Sheffield. It was intended as a temporary building and wards were constructed from wood; wards of stone were built in the early 1890s. It was extended multiple times in the early 20th century and patients with other contagious diseases were admitted.
