Bamburgh Castle and windmill, Northumberland

This volcanic outcrop has been used as a defensive site since the 1st century BC, although most of the remains seen are here from the 12th century and later. To the right of the picture is the tower windmill. Its importance is seen by the defensive wall surrounding it, and it may have supplied the castle with flour at one time.
