Barbican Estate, Barbican, Greater London

The bedroom of show flat number one at the Barbican centre at Moorfields. The bold patterned curtains are typical of the period. The photograph is black and white but the colours were probably very strong. Orange, purple and lime green were all fashionable. Fitted bedroom furniture was unusual at this time. The housing on the estate included flats, maisonettes and terraced houses. The public and communal buildings included; a fire station, coroner's court, a hostel, the City of London School for Girls, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Barbican Centre. The complex was built over a nearly twenty year period beginning in 1962-3. The photograph comes from the John Laing Company Archive.
