Barnard Castle School, Barnard Castle, Durham

The school dates from 1883-6 and was designed by Clark & Moscrop of Darlington in a Jacobean style. It was built for the Trustees of Benjamin Flounders with the Trustees of St. John's Hospital, Barnard Castle and a Durham University Committee. In 1889-90 a sanatorium was built, in 1896 a swimming-bath block and in 1899-1900 a science block. It was originally known as the North Eastern County School. The name was changed to Barnard Castle School in 1924. It is now (2010) a co-educational independent day and boarding school and stands in Newgate.
