Barnett Homestead, Erskine Hill, Hendon, Greater London

These cottages were built in 1916 by Sir Alfred Yarrow. They were to house war widows and their children. Sir Alfred had risen from a poor background in East London by starting a successful shipbuilding firm. These cottages were just one of many philanthropic acts that he carried out in his later life. They are also part of the Hampstead Garden Suburb development of charitable housing. The location of the cottages in middle class streets reflects the development's ideas on charity and the proper organisation of society.
