Bengough's Almshouses, Horfield Road, Bristol
The almshouses date from 1878 and were designed by Foster and Wood. They have an inscription reading ERECTED 1878/ FOUNDED BY HENRY BENGOUGH 1818. Henry Bengough (1739 - 1818) was a Bristol Sheriff, Mayor and Alderman. There is a statue of him in the Lord Mayor’s Chapel. When he died he arranged for the trustees of Bristol Charities to manage his funds in order to provide an almshouse ‘as a perpetual place of refuge for the aged and infirm’. The almshouses became a care home in 1996 and were later converted into flats.
