Along with shipbuilding, heavy industry and coal mining, the Victorian era brought large numbers of holidaying families to the coastline of the north east, fueling a bonanza of new leisure facilities and infrastructure. Bents Park, a 20th-century addition, incorporates many traditional features, including a bandstand, parade, miniature amphitheatre and green.
