Bestwood Colliery, Bestwood St Albans, Nottinghamshire

The engine house for the colliery was built in 1874 and is unusually ornate, leading to it being made a Grade II Listed Building. It is notable as an early use of structural concrete. It housed a vertical twin cylinder, non-condensing steam winding engine. The colliery closed in 1967, but the engine was kept operable until 1971. Find out more about steam power in our Teachers' Kit - Steam Power.
