An early photograph of the seafront at Blackpool with tourists walking along a path and on the beach. This is probably the North Shore. A collection of bathing huts are ready for use. Boats are drawn up that may be fishing boats or offering sea trips. Blackpool first became popular in the 1780s but begsn to get large numbers of visitors when the railway arrived in the 1840s. The 1890s saw many new developments. The present promenade was begun in 1897. The tower was built in 1894, Victoria Pier in 1893 and the Winter gardens in 1896.
