The Georgian facade of 27-32 Southernhay West, Exeter, in 1942. The rest of the terrace has been destroyed by bombing. In 1942 Exeter and a number of other cities were targeted by Hitler in revenge for Air Marshal Harris' bombing campaign against German cities such Lubeck. Many Britsih cities were specifically targeted for their cultural significance, the Germans used the Baedecker travel guidebook to pick these cities and so they became known as the 'Baedecker Raids'.
