Bowes Castle, Bowes, Durham

This ruined castle has a Norman keep of circa 1171-87 that was built by Richard, the engineer for King Henry II. There are also foundations of a forebuilding and a moat. It was reported as being in ruins in 1325, and was said to have been dismantled in the 17th century. It is now (2010) in the care of English Heritage. Find out more.
