Brinkburn Priory, Brinkburn, Northumberland
Brinkburn Priory was an Augustinian monastery. It was founded in 1135 and dissolved in 1536. It was founded by William Bertram I of Mitford during the reign of Henry I (1100-1135). It was originally for 12 canons (priests). In around 1322 the prior asked the king for more money because of losses they had sustained from raids by the Scots. The church, which was re-roofed and repaired in 1858. It is a fine example of late 12th-century northern architecture. This property is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
