Brittain Colliery, Butterley Park Road, Ripley, Derbyshire

Brittain colliery was founded by the Butterley Company between 1845 and 1848. Coal was mined here for over 50 years. All that remains is the headstock tower over the shaft leading down into the mine and the machinery attached. This would have been used to lower the workers into the mine and raise the coal up to the surface.
