Brough Castle, Brough, Cumbria

In around 1100 a stone castle was built here. It was built on the remains of an earlier Roman fort, known as Verteris. The castle was destroyed by the Scots in 1174 but rebuilt by 1200. Robert Clifford built the round tower in about 1300. Then his grandson, Roger, built the main block containing the hall about 50 years later. This was accidentally burnt down following a 'great Christmas party' in 1521. The castle was then left derelict for along time. It was then restored in a Medieval style in 1659-62 by Lady Anne Clifford. Find out more
