Castletump near Dymock, Gloucestershire

Situated 3 km north of Newent in north Gloucestershire, the hamlet of Castletump takes its name from the substantial Norman earthwork on the north-eastern edge of the settlement. Many mottes such as these survive due to their method of construction. Stone and timber were frequently incorporated in the earthen mounds to provide stability and drainage.
