Chapel and Sunday School, Atherstone, Warwickshire

This nonconformist chapel was built in 1827, it has the inscriptions 'INDEPENDENT CHAPEL 1827' and 'SUNDAY SCHOOL ERECTED 1837'. Sunday Schools were established from the 1780s and taught basic literacy, numeracy and Religious Education. Before compulsory state education many children had to work and Sunday Schools were the only education available to them.
