Cheshunt Great House, Goff's Lane, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire

These are the remains of a 15th century moated house which was destroyed by fire in 1965. The house was owned by Cardinal Wolsey. He was Henry VIII's Lord Chancellor and one of the most powerful men in England during the sixteenth century. Elizabeth I also used the house as a hunting lodge during many stays there. It was timber framed but its exterior was cased in brick in 1762-72. Further alterations were made after 1806 when a Gothick entrance facade was added.
