Aerial view reconstruction drawing of the Castle, Port and Priory as they looked at the end of the 12th Century. The motte and bailey castle was built by Richard de Redvers in 1100 AD. It was besieged and captured by Walter de Pinkney in 1148. Although re-fortified after this it became a residence (home) and played little strategic role in later conflicts. It was demolished by order of Parliament in 1651 during the Civil War. The Augustinian priory was founded by Baldwin de Redvers around 1150. The priory church, which still stands today, was completed in 1234. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2011). Find out more.
