Church of St Mary, St Mary's Gate, Stafford, Staffordshire

This collegiate church replaced a previous chapel in the 13th and 14th centuries. Prior to the Reformation St Mary's had a college of thirteen canons (including a dean). It was in effect a cathedral without a bishop. Important restoration work was made by Sir Gilbert Scott between 1841 and 1844. The foundations of the original chapel can still be seen in the church.
