Church of St Mary, Warham Road, Binham, Norfolk

The Church of St Mary was originally built as the church to Binham priory. Much of the church dates to the 12th and 13th centuries. The Benedictine Priory was founded in 1091 as a dependency of St Albans. In 1539 the priory was dissolved by King Henry VIII and most of its property was granted to Sir Thomas Paston. Since the dissolution the nave of the church has remained in use as the parish church and is known as the Priory Church of St Mary and the Holy Cross. Restoration work to the church roof was carried out in 1715 and 1903 and the west window was bricked up in 1809. In 1987-90 further restoration was carried out using funds provided by English Heritage, the Historic Churches Preservation Trust and the Norfolk Churches Trust. This property is now in the care of English Heritage (2010) and managed by Binham Parochial Church Council.
