Clifford Castle, Clifford, Herefordshire

These are the remains of a Motte and Bailey castle. It was probably built between 1067 and 1070 by William Fitz Osbern. There were additional 13th century fortifications in stone. It is the ruins of the 13th century castle that survive. The castle was held by the Clifford family in the 13th century. It was seized by King Edward II from Earl Thomas of Lancaster in 1322. It was also filled with supplies of food in anticipation of an attack by Owain Glendower in 1403. The castle fell out of use after this date.
