Council Houses, Saxons Close, Filkins, Oxfordshire

This row of 4 council houses is dated 1929 on a tablet in the central gable. They were designed by Morley Horder and built in Cotswold vernacular style using local stone. They are believed to be the earliest example of the use of traditional materials for council houses. The choice of style was that of Sir Stafford Cripps who lived in the village. He paid for the difference in cost of the extra labour and materials needed. The intention was to integrate the council houses both visually and socially into the life of a picturesque village. Later council housing in Bulls Close, Filkins, and in Burford and Kelmscott, was to follow this example.
