Derwent Mills, Cockermouth, Cumbria

Mills were often built using similar designs to domestic buildings; many were elaborate, sometimes ostentatious, examples of industrial architecture. However, other mills, such as Derwent, were built with a pragmatic disregard for aesthetics. In many ways mills such as this are the true forerunners of the modern factory.
